What’s Been Happening This Off-Season

By

Winter at Cheley is quieter, but it’s not slow. Snow covers camp, and while cabins and lodges sit empty, the facilities team is out each day working on projects that prepare us for summer. On any given day, you’ll hear trucks moving through camp, see paths being cleared, and find projects in progress across different areas. While campers aren’t here, the work continues.

Throughout the off-season, the team has been focused on maintaining buildings, improving key areas, and taking on projects that support camp operations. Here’s a look at what they’ve been working on:

Facility Improvements & Repairs

This off-season has included a number of updates to key buildings and shared spaces:

  • Repairing and reinforcing Chapel benches
  • Installing updated countertops in the boathouses at the TEs
  • Addressing a roof leak at the GTE Lodge
  • Installing new hydrants at the Ranch to supply water to horse pastures
  • Removing old outhouses at outcamping sites
  • Taking down an aging bridge and treehouse at the Outpost
  • General upkeep across camp buildings to maintain safe, functional spaces

These are the kinds of updates that keep camp running smoothly day to day and help prevent larger issues during the summer season.

Pond Rehabilitation Work

One of the most significant projects this off-season has been the rebuild of the Cheley pond and dam. This work went beyond routine maintenance. The team reshaped and reinforced the entire area to improve long-term stability, drainage, and overall function. The project included:

  • Rebuilding and flattening the top of the dam
  • Bringing in dirt to fill and level worn areas
  • Adding river rock along the inside of the pond
  • Supporting the regrowth of natural grasses and vegetation

This was a large, multi-step effort that will improve both the durability of the space and how it’s used during the summer. It’s the kind of project that makes a lasting impact, even if it blends into the background once camp is in full swing.

Grounds & Ongoing Projects

Alongside larger projects, there’s been consistent work across camp:

  • Snow plowing and maintaining winter access
  • Improving water drainage and piping systems across camp
  • Managing perennials and vegetation
  • Filling holes and leveling high-traffic areas
  • Burning slash piles as part of ongoing forest and land management
  • Tackling smaller “projects of opportunity” that improve operations

These day-to-day efforts help keep camp ready—not just for opening day, but for the entire season. And looking ahead to this summer, plans are underway for a Pavilion revamp, including adding turf to create a more durable and functional space for activities and gatherings like All-Camp Campfire.

Health, Safety & Licensing Updates

In preparation for childcare licensing requirements, the team has also completed several important updates to specific buildings and areas:

  • Adding recessed windows in the PowerHouse
  • Installing railings on the Chipeta cabins
  • Clearing the firewood pile from behind the Beehive

These improvements are part of our ongoing commitment to providing a safe, well-maintained, and compliant environment for campers and staff.

Looking Ahead to Summer

By the time campers arrive, much of this work will blend into the background. Spaces will feel ready. Trails will be clear. Buildings will be in good shape. And the focus can shift to what makes Cheley what it is: a place for connection, growth, and a meaningful, fun summer.

We’re grateful for the care and effort our facilities team puts in all off-season to make that possible!
