If you’ve scrolled through any workplace discourse in the past few years, you’ve probably heard it all: “Gen Z doesn’t want to work,” “they’re lazy,” “they have no work ethic.” But is that really true? At Cheley, we’ve seen firsthand that our Gen Z staff aren’t just showing up, they’re excelling.
Born between 1997 and 2012, Gen Z has grown up in a world of rapid change, economic uncertainty, and technological advancements. And yet, they are stepping into the workforce with adaptability, innovation, and a strong sense of purpose. In 2024, 200 of our 230 summer staff members were Gen Z, including 17 of our 24 directing staff members. Additionally, two of our year-round staff members are Gen Z, and as we fill our roster for 2025, an even larger percentage of our staff will be Gen Z.
Breaking the Myth
The headlines say one thing, but the research tells a different story. Recent research and articles from Forbes, Fortune, and Stanford University paint a different picture of Gen Z in the workforce.
Gen Z is redefining work ethic, not abandoning it. According to a 2024 Forbes article, while 74% of surveyed managers initially found Gen Z challenging to work with, that perception often changes once they understand Gen Z’s priorities flexibility, purpose-driven work, and healthy work-life balance.
They want meaningful, value-driven work. Unlike past generations who may have prioritized financial stability above all else, Gen Z is drawn to workplaces that align with their beliefs. At Cheley, we see this play out every day our staff members aren’t just here for a summer job; they’re here to make an impact.
They are independent problem-solvers. Contrary to the “coddled” stereotype, Gen Z grew up in a world of constant change and uncertainty. This has made them highly adaptable, creative, and self-sufficient qualities we see in action every day at camp.
Our Gen Z Staff Are Raising the Bar
If you want to see responsibility, resilience, and leadership in action, look no further than our Gen Z staff. They show up early, stay late, and go the extra mile to create a safe, supportive, and outrageously fun environment for campers.
Leading with Responsibility and Care
From counselors to program specialists to kitchen staff, our team takes their work seriously because they know camp is more than just a summer job; it’s a community. Whether they’re leading activities, supporting campers through challenges, or keeping camp running smoothly behind the scenes, they bring focus and dedication to every role. They make quick decisions under pressure, manage risks, and take responsibility for their campers’ well-being.
Cultivating Inclusivity and Empathy
Gen Z values diversity and empathy, and that shows up in the way our staff builds community at camp. They create inclusive spaces where every camper feels valued. Making sure everyone has a seat at the table (literally and figuratively), they lead with kindness. They recognize that belonging is one of the most important parts of camp, and they work hard to make sure every camper experiences it.
Mentorship and Personal Development
Our counselors are mentors. They invest time in understanding each camper’s unique needs, providing guidance that extends beyond camp life. They lead by example on every activity, showing campers what it means to be resilient, kind, and confident in their own skin.
Redefining Work Ethic for a New Era
The work our staff does every day is challenging and meaningful. Our demanding schedule requires energy, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to camper well-being. At Cheley, we see Gen Z redefining hard work through their leadership, mentorship, and commitment to camp’s future.
Gen Z’s work ethic may look different from previous generations and that’s a strength. They’re proving that responsibility isn’t about grinding yourself to exhaustion; it’s about showing up fully, leading with intention, and prioritizing what truly matters.
