Cheley is a truly amazing place where backcountry skills meet leadership skills. During backpacking trips, outcamping and horseback riding adventures, friendships develop that grow throughout the summer and often last a lifetime. After one summer as a counselor at Cheley, I saw how character was built at camp. My sisters, like many teenagers, were struggling with figuring out who they wanted to be. I insisted that my parents send them to Cheley. At camp, they discovered friends and counselors who appreciated them for the qualities they already had. It made a world of difference in their confidence levels when they returned to Iowa, and it only added to my enthusiasm to return for another year of the Cheley Experience.

I am one of five camp nurses lucky enough to be part of Cheley Colorado Camps. For me, Cheley represents healthy people making and living healthy choices. Camp is a place that challenges and supports each individual, whether staff or camper. Ten days of staff training prepares everyone to do our jobs in a caring and encouraging way, working as a team. My 25 years of nursing experience in intensive care, surgery and recovery prepared me for the medical aspect of this job, but I have to thank Cheley for the personal growth I have experienced at camp. Working and living with young people from all walks of life has been a great teacher for me. The staff is outstanding, the experience challenging, the spirit truthful and the friendships long lasting. All three of my kids have experienced Cheley. The youngest is returning this summer as a participant in the Counselor In Leadership Training program. Daily, my husband and I see the leadership skills and sense of community our three kids have developed over the years due, in part, to attending Cheley.

After six summers as a Cheley camper and three more spent on staff, it's easy for me to refer to the red roofed buildings of 3960 Fish Creek Road as my second home. At its core, Cheley Colorado Camps is powered by an infectous energy and an indelible sense of community. Whether it's witnessed on the hiking trail as campers motivate one another during a steep summit push, or whether it's found out on the Chapel lawn as the choir sings while a sea of Blue Kerchiefs gaze out on the Mummy Range, there's no denying the dynamism of the Cheley environment. As a staff member, I have been able to both foster physical growth and instill emotional confidence within my campers. Concurrently, I've found my own convictions strengthened while working at Cheley. With a mountain setting to inspire and an incredible team of staff to provide support, I find each summer increasingly rewarding, as it arrives complete with new challenges and a heightened sense of achievement for both campers and staff alike.
